The MAX3232 is a TTL/CMOS to RS232 converter IC, it’s similar to the popular MAX232 IC which has been in the market for a long time now. The MAX3232 is a modern replacement for MAX232 IC, both the IC’s share the same pinout and package style hence it is a direct substitute.
The major advancement made in this IC is that it can support both 3.3V system and 5V system while the older one the MAX232 can only support only 5V system. This is a great news if you are working with a 3.3V system then MAX3232 is an ideal choice than MAX232 since it can avoid the problem of logic level conversion.
The MAX3232 device consists of two line drivers, two line receivers, and a dual charge-pump circuit with ±15-kV ESD protection terminal to terminal (serial-port connection terminals, including GND).
This simple module makes it easy to use the MAX3232, it comes with a jumper cable.
MAX3232 is used for TTL/CMOS to RS232 conversion. In most of cases, Microcontrollers (PIC/ARM/Atmel) operates on TTL/CMOS logic that is it communicates through either 0V or +5V or +3.3V, but if you need to communicate with computers, they work with the RS232 standard which operates at logic level -24V or +24V. So, if we have to interface these microcontrollers with Computer we need to convert the TTL/CMOS logic to RS232 logic.
